The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
