Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
