British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
