The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
