TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to reduce the quantity of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The update is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global rollout. This shift comes amid a surge in AI-generated material, driven by new content generation software.
AI Proliferation Online
Recent reports that almost 10% of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform primarily display AI-generated videos. A large amount of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or dreamlike.
“We know from our community that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we intend to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” said a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
The platform announced that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as made with AI. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are uploaded to the platform each day, making AI-generated material a minor part of its overall inventory.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI-generated videos they view by using the topic control feature in the application and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter include politics, style, cosmetics, and dance.
Content Labeling and Policies
Its rules mandate creators to label convincing AI-generated content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.
Furthermore, the service will now attach an AI-generated watermark to content produced via its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from trying to evade the tagging system.
Educational Initiatives
The company is also establishing a $2 million awareness program for professionals and institutions to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will support educational bodies focused on educating programming and robotics.
Content Safety Approach
TikTok has defended its content review process, amid controversy over intentions to cut jobs for numerous content moderators in Britain. TikTok is planning to cut 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A company official stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by people. The platform stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to reliance on its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
