Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
