Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
